Rosca de Reyes (Cake of Kings)
In this participatory work, we invite guests to cut and serve an overcrowded Rosca de Reyes. Each layer of the cake contains a material history that stretches across time uprooting biblical mythologies and the horrors of Spanish conquest which preceded contemporary state violence.
In Christian traditions, the Rosca de Reyes conceals a figurine that represents newborn baby Jesus, son of God. Fearing that the newborn messiah would usurp his throne, Herod the Great ordered the execution of all male children in the kingdom. It is customary that after parting the cake, the person who finds the figurine must bring it home and protect it from harm.
Each iteration of our Rosca de Reyes conflates the biblical creation myth and the five-century-old Spanish conquest of Mexico with the contemporary Mexican state’s policing of land and people. This counternarrative reveals the many layers and cycles of state violence as participants soon realize they manifest as physical barriers to ingestion and nourishment of the human body.
